"Which Brush Do You Use To Ink In Procreate?"

One of the most frequent questions I get when I post work that I've done in Procreate is "which brush do you use?" While I'm not a big fan of that question in general (ultimately it's not the tool, it's the user), I understand the impulse for artists to ask it. I've asked the same question in the past. And one reason I'm not a fan of the question is that the answer has never led to me becoming a better artist. Only practice and time have made that happen.

That said... Procreate is a relatively new production tool available to digital artists (the app has been around for years, but the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil have made it a game changer for professionals) and if it can help other artists discover new tools, I'm happy to give my answer!

So earlier this year I created a short video showing people which brush I prefer to use when inking in Procreate...

Since then I've also started using a modified version of the Studio Pen to ink some work. It's a bit smoother than Eric's brush (which has a great grit to it) and feels more like inking with a sable brush. I altered the Studio Pen using Procreate's amazing brush engine to make it less "squishy." Sorry if I can't be more specific, but the original brush felt like inking with jello sometimes. I toned that effect down a bit and now if feel more like working with an actual brush.

So now you know which brush(es) I usually ink with in Procreate. I use many other brushes, of course, but those are my go-to inkers.

You can download Eric Merced's inking brushes HERE.

You can download my modified version of the Studio Pen brush HERE.

And if you're an iPad Pro artist, you need to pick up the Procreate app. It's a must-have. Get Procreate HERE.

If you liked this video, please check out the other videos on my YouTube channel and watch some of the time lapse recording of me working in Procreate. And be sure to subscribe! As I'm updating and adding content to this new website, I'll also be adding to and improving my YouTube channel.

Thanks for reading!
